Some family stories are shaped as much by the years of silence as by the conversations that eventually follow. For Sylvester Bracey Jr., reconnecting with his father became the beginning of a much larger story about identity, forgiveness and the influence one voice can have on another life.

Now, Bracey Jr. is preparing to carry those lessons into a new arena. In the third quarter of 2026, the founder of Inspiration by Sylvester is transitioning into inspirational speaking, with plans to address audiences both in person and virtually.

Conversations That Changed Two Lives

Bracey Jr. grew up without his father, Sylvester Bracey Sr., in the home. Their eventual connection gave him something he had missed earlier in life: the chance to hear his father’s perspective directly.

Bracey Sr., a Marine who served during the Vietnam War, had experiences that extended well beyond the family. He appeared in the 1970 documentary The Black G.I., footage now held by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Years later, clips of Bracey Sr. discussing his experiences in Vietnam generated tens of millions of impressions on social media, according to his son. The attention led ABC7 News Chicago to visit the Bracey family and report on their story.

Yet for Bracey Jr., the real significance remained personal. The conversations between father and son offered lessons he began sharing publicly through Cuuulcha by Sylvester: Conversations w/my Father.

From Family Story to Film

Those conversations eventually inspired Bracey Jr. to create and star in Kindred Spirits, a 14 minute short film centered on love, forgiveness, fatherhood and sonship.

The project reached a notable milestone when the Smithsonian NMAAHC used it as the closing piece at its Pearl Bowser film festival in Brooklyn. The response reinforced Bracey Jr.’s belief that stories rooted in one family can still speak to experiences shared by many.

“We are more similar, than we are dissimilar,” he says.

That idea now sits at the heart of his speaking work.

Bringing the Lessons Into the Room

Bracey Jr. has already spent time speaking with younger generations. As a prior co-chair of Empowering Black Professionals, a 900 member employee resource group at a major commercial insurance carrier, he worked with Chicago high school and HBCU college students. He also mentors college students and young professionals, often passing along lessons he learned from his father.

Through Inspiration by Sylvester, he plans to bring that work to a wider audience.

His premise is straightforward: “Voices matter, and voices lead to choices.”

For Bracey Jr., that belief was formed through experience. Reconnecting with his father changed the direction of two lives. His next chapter is about seeing how far those lessons can travel.
