Deidre’s journey began long before she became a public figure. Her advocacy for individuals with Down syndrome, survivors of trafficking, and underserved youth led her to discover one truth: philanthropy should be built into every business plan.
“You should never start a business that doesn’t have a path to giving back,” she insists. “Your purpose has to outlive your paycheck.”
Lessons From the Field
Pujols has seen both sides of philanthropy—the celebrity-driven campaigns and the grassroots work in developing nations. While her campaign Strike Out Slavery drew massive audiences in sports arenas, she found deeper fulfillment in smaller, community-based projects where real change takes root.
“People love to celebrate causes, but engagement is where the difference happens,” she says. “Awareness is good—but action transforms.”
Merging Heart and Strategy
Open Gate International’s programs combine vocational training with life coaching, preparing participants for independence and self-worth. In India, her culinary initiative—built in partnership with Vision Rescue—reflects this philosophy perfectly: part social enterprise, part education hub.
“It’s built to sustain itself,” she explains. “We’re training people to thrive long after the cameras are gone.”
